A new coronavirus - 2019 Novel (New) Coronavirus - that was first detected in China is now spreading worldwide. This virus causes a disease called COVID-19 and can lead to fever, cough, and shortness of breath. There are thousands of confirmed cases in a growing number of countries internationally and the virus is spreading to the United States. The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in NY has risen dramatically over the past few days.
Although there are no confirmed cases in St. Lawrence County at this time, Sheriff Brooks Bigwarfe in consultation with St. Lawrence County Public Health, has taken the preventative measure of effective immediately temporary suspending visitation at the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility to safeguard inmates as well as staff. We will consult with our Public Health Department as well as our State and Federal Partners to determine if further suspension is required.
Clergy and attorneys needing access to parishioners or clients should contact 315-379-2367 to prearrange appointments for admittance for secure visitation, arrangements will remain at the discretion of the Sheriff.
The Sheriff's Office is also exploring internet-based video visitation for attorney client appointments and will update if such visitation is able to be offered.
Please check back for further updates on visitation.
By allowing inmates to maintain contact with their families and friends thru periodic visits, both the inmate and the correctional facility benefit from improved inmate behavior during confinement. It shall therefore be the policy of the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility that all inmates confined are entitled to periodic visits and such visits shall be permitted with the inmates consent.
