EMC, Soil & Water District Support Arbor Day
Arbor Day, the annual nationwide celebration of trees and tree conservation, will be observed on April 28. As part of that celebration, the St. Lawrence County Environmental Management Council (EMC) and Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) are taking this opportunity to remind St. Lawrence County residents of the importance of planting trees.
On Tuesday, April 25, the SWCD distributed over 22,000 trees to those who had placed orders with the Department of Environmental Conservation Saratoga Tree Nursery. On Arbor Day the SWCD will distribute more than 62,000 pre-paid trees as part of their annual Tree and Shrub Program.
This program, in operation since 1957, has distributed millions of trees across the county. Dawn C. Howard, District Manager for the Soil & Water Conservation District office, notes that “Planting trees is something anybody can do to help combat air, soil and water pollution.” Some trees may be available for sale on Arbor Day, please call the SWCD office at 386-3582 for further information.
The EMC wants you to know about a free booklet from the National Arbor Day Foundation. Called “Conservation Trees for Your Farm, Family & Future”, the booklet uses colorful photos and illustrations and easy-to-understand descriptions to guide tree planting and care. For your free booklet, send your name and address to: Conservation Trees For Your Farm, Family & Future, The National Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Avenue, Nebraska City, NE 68410
