Canton - April 5, 1999 - Believe it or not, summer is right around the corner.  The St. Lawrence County Environmental Management Council (EMC) wants to remind you to get your pets protected for summer in the North Country.

St. Lawrence County has an alarmingly high-rate of rabies and lyme disease.  There are ways to protect your pets against these diseases:

  • vaccinate your dog or cat with both the rabies and lyme vaccine every year;
  • avoid interactions with racoons and animals that are acting peculiar; and
  • check your pet’s fur for ticks.

The St. Lawrence County Public Health Department will be hosting a number of free rabies clinics in the next few months.  The are scheduled for:

Your veterinarian can administer the lyme vaccination to your pet.  The first lyme vaccination will need a booster in 4 weeks.  It is then an annual vaccination.  Vaccination alone may save your pet’s life.  Each of vaccine’s cost less than $20.

If your pet does come into contact with an animal you suspect may be rabid, contact your veterinarian and the Public Health Department at 379-2213.
