Throughout the country and across the State, thousands of community organizations are showing their commitment to keeping America beautiful by “adopting” stretches of highway and pledging to keep them litter free. They’re proud of their communities and have a hand in shaping the image they present to visitors.
We welcome individuals, families, business and organizations including civic, fraternal, service, youth, senior, scouts, educational, religious and neighborhood organizations to “adopt” a segment of county highway. As a safety precaution, volunteers are required to be at least 12 years of age. Volunteers between 12 and 18 years old must be supervised with at least one supervisor for every six young adults. Volunteers also must have liability insurance.
In addition to the pride and satisfaction that volunteers will receive from performing public service, St. Lawrence County Department of Highways (SLC DOH) will post a roadside signs crediting your organization for its beautification efforts. We ask organizations to adopt a stretch of highway for a specified period of time. The adopters clear litter twice to several times per year. SLC DOH provides trash bags that are left roadside so SLC DOH crews can properly dispose of trash. To ensure safety, SLC DOH also provides reflective safety gears including hard hats and vests.
